Ruby Duff is an alt-pop artist based in Leeds. Describing her music as “as colourful as a Wes Anderson movie and as vibrant as a Bruce Springsteen performance”, the childlike melodies of her music belie Ruby’s mature songwriting talent.
Ruby needed artworks created for three of her singles - Dancing Under Lights, Cake and Zoom - for use across all release assets. She wanted these artworks to reflect her unique voice and the transportive effect of her music.

With her cultural references in mind and inspired by her love of surrealism, I worked closely with Ruby on the creative direction and production of the artwork.
For “Dancing Under Lights”, we wanted to capture the feeling of travel. It needed to convey movement from a grey, dull world into the vibrant, magical land of Ruby’s music. To do this, I directed a shoot on an abandoned London street and pieced elements of the images together to create a collage-effect artwork. In the lead-up to the song’s drop, we released the individual elements on social media, culminating in the release of the main artwork.
I also wove a thread between all three artworks by including recurring motifs. For example, Ruby’s dancing shadow in Cake reappears in the artwork for Dancing Under Lights. An easter egg hunt for dedicated fans, this subtle link also allowed the three artworks to cohesively reflect the spirit of Ruby’s music.
